EU Printers assist research into optimising UV technology
Envirocare was proud to project manage the UVITECH project which researched into optimising UV technology in the printing industry. The UVITECH project was funded by the European Commission via the CRAFT programme (Co-operative Research Award for Technology). The European Community has a mechanism for assisting SME’s with technical problems, when they do not have the resources, or expertise to carry it out themselves. The project investigated the printing process using UV inks and varnishes in various small and medium-sized printing companies with a view to health and safety and environmental issues. The UVITECH project is a notable example of European member states working together to solve common problems in the printing industry. The six printing companies from four different European countries involved in the CRAFT programme, gained experience in using a "new generation" of UV varnishes and inks with low emissions. The research concluded that printing using UV inks does not present a higher risk to health than conventional running if workers take standard precautions. The greatest risk when working with UV-curable inks comes from bad working practices. Envirocare was involved in measuring UV ink exposure and monitoring health & safety practices within the industry.
The findings of the UVITECH project should be essential reading for anybody involved in the Printing & Packaging sector.
As a result of all of this work, a pan-European health and safety generic risk assessment and an environmental impact assessment has been produced in an electronic format.
